Senior Bioinformatics Scientist - Drug Discovery

Healx is a mission-driven technology company pioneering the next wave of drug discovery to bring novel, effective treatments to rare disease patients around the world. There are over 7,000 known rare diseases that affect 400 million people across the globe, but only 5% of those conditions have an approved treatment. By combining frontier AI technology with deep drug discovery and development expertise, Healx can accelerate the pace, increase the scale and improve the chance of success of rare disease
treatment development to meet this huge unmet need and have unprecedented patient impact.

Founded in Cambridge, UK, in 2014 by Dr Tim Guilliams (a Biochemical Engineer and tech entrepreneur) and Dr David Brown (co-inventor of Viagra and former Global Head of Drug Discovery at Roche), Healx has raised $90 million to date, added over a dozen projects to its risk-balanced therapeutic portfolio, and built a cross-functional team of tech and drug discovery experts. For more information, visit Healx | Discovering new treatments for rare disease patients or follow on Twitter and LinkedIn.

The role

This is a highly collaborative and cross-disciplinary role at the interface between digital sciences, pharmacology and business development. Through your creativity, scientific knowledge and drug discovery flair, you will design and implement compelling computational solutions to help Healx’s partners make an impact in the rare disease therapeutic landscape. This is an exciting role working on a variety of drug discovery projects and across different disease areas.

You’ll be:

- generating and testing novel therapeutic hypotheses using our AI powered drug discovery approaches
- elucidating drug and disease mechanisms of action from Omics and other therapeutic data types
- applying bioinformatics algorithms to assist our pharmacologists and wet lab scientists in establishing an understanding of why a drug may treat a disease
- developing, improving and maintaining algorithms that predict novel therapeutic hypotheses in collaboration with our machine learning scientists and other members of the digital science team
- working with our biotech and pharma partners to advance the next generation of treatments for rare disease

We are looking for someone who has:

- graduated in a relevant bioinformatics or computational biology discipline with experience in applying your skills to improve human health
- drug discovery or other translational medicine experience
- experience with navigating and understanding a wide range of biological data, especially transcriptomics data, and a demonstrable ability to model biological principles into quantifiable hypotheses
- excellent proficiency with programming languages such as R and Python with a demonstrated ability to adhere to good coding practices
- working knowledge of chemogenomics databases (ChEMBL, Drugbank) and programmatic ways to query them
- Experience working with cloud computing services (AWS)
- Excellent communication and project management skills

It’s a bonus if you have:

- proficiency with bioinformatics workflow managers and container technology
- experience with machine learning and/or knowledge graphs
- an understanding of L1000 or related datasets
