The role
Healx is looking for an enthusiastic Bioinformatician to join the Digital Sciences team to play a key role in Bioinformatic activities that improve outcomes for rare disease patients by discovering drug combination therapies with improved efficacy and safety over standard of care. This role will enhance the capabilities of our AI Drug Discovery Platform. You will support development of novel algorithms for the prediction of drug synergy and polypharmacology required by our growing portfolio of Rare Neurology and Oncology Programmes.  You will partner closely with and report to the Senior Director of Digital Science to plan, develop and deliver algorithms and bioinformatic workflows that generate therapeutic hypotheses. You’ll be closely collaborating with Pharmacologists, Biocurators, Data Engineers, Bioinformaticians, Cheminformaticians and Machine Learning Engineers & Scientists to deliver in silico predictions that will be experimentally tested. Owing to the unique cross functional and highly collaborative Healx Team, the research you perform will be rapidly translated to meaningful outcomes, with the potential to improve patient quality of life.
Key responsibilities
  • Application of drug combination prediction algorithms to generate and rationalise novel therapeutic hypotheses for Healx portfolio of rare diseases
  • Innovation and improvement of Healx drug combination technologies
  • Supporting the Healx Preclinical Team to deliver the best outcomes for rare disease patients by ensuring our AI Discovery Platform is maintained
  • You will know you are successful when
  • Digital Science delivers the best treatment predictions with highest chance of clinical and commercial success to our Pharmacologists
  • Algorithm and workflow improvements you’ve contributed are applied in active Preclinical Discovery Programmes
  • You are actively developing high quality code in collaboration with colleagues, and receiving great feedback on your commits
  • What we're looking for
  • You have experience in Biotech or Pharma Bioinformatics, a background in human disease biology, and you’re now looking for your next challenge. You are excited about taking on new projects and responsibilities in a mission-driven startup. We'd love to hear from you if your experience and interest overlaps with this profile:
  • Bioinformatics, especially processing multiomics, compound bioactivities or other life sciences data for the discovery of drug combinations
  • Reduction of algorithms to code, especially in Python, R, and Nextflow Pipelines
  • Hands-on and collaborative approach to Bioinformatic algorithm and workflow development
  • Interest in biotech/ techbio and its impact of improving patient outcomes

    The role
    Healx is looking for a talented Machine Learning Engineer to join our Tech team to help develop our drug discovery platform and discover new treatments for rare diseases.
     
    This role will report to our Director of Tech Strategy and will contribute to developing and applying cutting edge machine learning approaches, knowledge graph reasoning and agentic workflows that underpin our Drug Discovery workflows to find novel treatments for rare diseases.
     
    You will be part of a highly cross-functional and collaborative team that brings together machine learning engineers, software engineers, bioinformaticians and drug discovery scientists. You will work closely with domain experts to translate complex biological questions into robust, scalable machine learning solutions, and your work will have a direct and meaningful impact on our drug discovery programmes.

  • Build automated reasoning over large knowledge graphs and proprietary methods for efficient generation of experimentally testable therapeutic hypotheses
  • Contribute to building, maintaining and improving our rare-disease knowledge graphs used to identify and reason over novel therapeutic hypotheses
  • Develop agentic tools and workflows to enable our teams to unlock insight from proprietary data and large datasets

  • You’ve built a strong understanding of Healx’s drug discovery workflows, our rare-disease knowledge graphs and the key users of our platform
  • You’ve delivered at least one meaningful improvement to our knowledge graph reasoning or hypothesis-generation stack (from prototype through to production), with appropriate evaluation, testing and documentation
  • You’re operating effectively in our hybrid, cross-functional environment—communicating progress and trade-offs clearly, partnering well with scientists and engineers, and demonstrating ownership from discovery through delivery
  • You’re consistently applying and advocating for strong engineering practices (e.g., code quality, reviews, reproducibility, experiment tracking, monitoring/observability where relevant), helping raise the bar across the team
  • What we're looking for
  • You have 2-5 years professional (in academia or industry) experience in machine learning, artificial intelligence or related field
  • You are excited about taking on new challenges and responsibilities in a mission-driven startup aiming at improving patient outcomes
  • You have an advanced degree (masters, PhD) in machine learning, biochemistry or related field with a focus on applied research or equivalent industry experience applying machine learning to complex real-world problems
  • You have a strong software development experience in Python and a good appreciation of the principles of software engineering

    Platform Engineer

    The role
    Healx is hiring a motivated Platform Engineer to build cloud infrastructure and develop production pipelines that enable our AI drug discovery process. You will bridge the gap between infrastructure and scientific software, both designing, building and supporting cloud infrastructure and collaborating with bioinformaticians, machine learning engineers and data scientists to implement data pipelines.
    You will join a small, agile engineering team where individuals take ownership of tasks, innovate quickly and collaborate extensively through pair programming. Working closely with technical members of data and digital science teams you will clearly see the impact your work has on pioneering the next generation of AI drug discovery and finding treatments for rare disease patients in need.

    Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, maintain and improve cloud infrastructure in AWS (and some GCP) to enable AI drug discovery workflows
  • Follow infrastructure as code (IaC) and CI/CD principles to build maintainable infrastructure using Terraform and CircleCI
  • Take advantage of latest AWS tools and apply best practices across our cloud estate to ensure security, availability and observability
  • Work closely with technical users across the company to understand and support their computational needs 
  • In collaboration with data scientists write code to build, test and automate production pipelines in tools such as Nextflow, Airflow, MLflow and KNIME
  • Embrace the use of AI coding tools and agents to accelerate delivery while retaining responsibility for system design, implementation and testing of code
  • You will know you are successful when
  • You have strong ownership of parts of our cloud infrastructure, familiarity with our Terraform codebase and are shipping regular improvements
  • Infrastructure you've designed and deployed is supporting drug discovery pipelines
  • You have taken ownership of security, cost management and observability in our cloud estate
  • Computational workflows are in production that you've built in Nextflow, Airflow, MLflow or similar in collaboration with digital scientists
  • You have shipped maintainable code to enable lambda functions, automation scripts and internal tools in several of our Python repositories
  • What we're looking for
  • We're looking for a mid level engineer with solid hands on experience  building cloud infrastructure in a commercial environment who is keen to apply what they already know and learn new skills.
  • You are highly collaborative and driven to solve problems that help others and drive the Healx mission
  • You have hands-on experience (typically around 2+ years)  working with a cloud platform, ideally AWS, and are excited about building cloud infrastructure following best practices
  • You are a proponent and practitioner of infrastructure as code principles, ideally with experience in Terraform, and have experience building, maintaining and scaling CI/CD pipelines
  • Solid experience writing maintainable and well tested code following best practices in at least one language (we use mainly Python and some Go)
  • An automation mindset, ideally with experience building production workflows in tools like Airflow
